I've seen this film a couple of times, and it gets stronger with each viewing. It's hard to imagine a big Hollywood studio today coming anywhere near making such a picture. Which puts one in mind of rock critic Robert Christgau's statement about post-SGT. PEPPER'S America: "The massification of bohemia." SCARECROW depicts a world long gone in the United States, a time when freedom could not only be conceived but lived. For this reason alone, not to mention the powerhouse acting chops of a young Pacino and Hackman, this movie is essential.

Possibly the greatest forgotten film of the 1970s. Great characters and acting. Mostly its a unique voice that makes this so great. Naturalism today, such as the non-stop "improv" of recent comedies, always looks forced to me, like you can see the wheels turning in performances. The quality of good acting has diminished slightly since this film, which is a gem.

I'm very surprised at how little I cared for this movie considering how much I like both actors. IMDB shows a very respectable viewer rating for "Scarecrow". I think that it's a case of Lemmings following one another. I used to go to a lot of movies when this one was released in 1973 and I had never seen it or heard anything about it. I can understand why after seeing it.

A "Midnight Cowboy" wanna-be perhaps? Though it has its moments, I find it hard to believe Pacino went from "The Godfather" to this.
