This is my first time reading The Healer's Apprentice as an adult, and I was thoroughly impressed with Dickerson's literary skill. I was also surprised to learn that this was her debut novel!
An enchanting story set in medieval Germany, this novel follows a young woman as she tries to find courage to be a healer while also being distracted by the handsome - and unavailable - sons of the Duke. However, Rose's fate is not the only thing that hangs in the balance. A sorcerer intent on harm runs loose in Hagenheim, and its up to Lord Hamlin, the Duke's eldest son, to stop the villain before a life is threatened.
Although this book is placed in the juvenile section at my library, it is really more suited to the New Adult genre. The tone and writing sounds like anything out of an adult fiction title (and a good deal better than most books I've read), and there are some situations that would be a little scary for some middle grade readers.
As for my personal opinion, I loved this book. I couldn't find a thing wrong with it, and it had wonderful elements of strong faith woven throughout. In fact, religion is a central theme in Dickerson's books, and this one is particularly powerful. The battle between good and evil is a little unsettling in its realism, but that much more rewarding when the true hero of the book is not a man or woman - but the Lord Himself. With complex characters, detailed descriptions of a fascinating time period, moving testaments to the power of faith in God, a thrilling romance, and a hint of whimsy in the form of the retelling of a fairy tale, you'll find that this novel will be one you'll put on your to-REread shelf.

This book made me fall in love with the author. Absolutely will love this series, if you're into romance that is. Though it did have enough action and mystery so as not too mushy.

I didn’t enjoy much. Super predictable and cliche. I hope her other books are better.

Too predictable and uninteresting. Slow-paced and mildly saccharine, it's better for idealists and romantics than it is for me. And that's saying a lot, because I love books, and I don't mind romance.
I'm not saying this wasn't a good book. It an okay book. But it could have been better. I hope Dickerson's other novels are better.

Melanie Dickerson is my favorite author for sure. This book: The Healer's Apprentice is very loosely based on Sleeping beauty. A nice story from the Hagenheim series. It is written in a way that focuses on both Rose and Lord Hamlin's viewpoint. Very interesting to read. I would definitely recommend this book to all.

this was the best book I ever read by Melenie Dickerson, she put Romance, adventure and a thriller all into one book. it was really great and I want to recommend it to you! I figured out that this is the first book in the series. I like how Melenie takes the fairy tales and makes them more interesting for instance this one is Sleeping beauty and it is my favorite one in the series. The romance is cute. I loved every page of it and I encourage you to read it.

A quick, easy and enjoyable read. Dickerson gives us a nice, fleshed out, retelling of Sleeping Beauty. The plot is well written, but still not any major surprises. A nice, clean, Christian romance for those of us who don't care for the smutty details.
