One of my very favorite picture books. With gorgeous illustrations and simple but poignant text, this may be one you want to buy and keep on your shelf!

Swanson bases "The House in the Night" on an old children's book called "This is the Key of the Kingdom," which features the same cyclical narrative structure. The book begins by stating simply, "Here is the key to the house," and builds from there into an elaborate description of the house. The prose does not rhyme but does contain a poetic quality, ushering the reader through a wonderfully mysterious journey with the moon.

Black, white and yellow illustrations beautifully compliment the story and enrapture both children and adults. Because of this book's uniqueness, children as young as 1 and probably as old as 5 will enjoy and savour it.

all the children's programmers love this book - for a good reason. The ambience, words and images resonate with the audience. Read it with your little one!

The illustrations are wonderful. My daughter loved the story, especially since it involved the moon and the sun. Simple and easy to follow story and those can be the best.
