Just okay

Rated 4/10. Below average. The 4 is for the few real laughs in this show.

I found this to be more sad than funny. The sex scenes and nudity were unnecessary and added nothing to the show.

5 Stars -- It'll shock some folks, so it's maybe not for everyone -- but after all these years I still think this is one of Alexander Payne's ingenious best. He grew up in Nebraska and so this pointed satire of High School life plays as a (very) subversive-kinda-love-letter to his home state.

I wish this movie were as clever, funny, and satiric as it thinks it is. I like movies about politics, and, as a former high school teacher and high school student, like movies about high school. However, Alexander Payne's movie, based on the noel by Tom Perrotta, is just too broad and obvious too be a good satire. Matthew Broderick, playing a sort of gone to seed version of his 80s persona, and Reese Witherspoon, as the driven, ambitious student, are both great and are the main reason to see the film. Jessica Campbell, as the the cynical lesbian who runs for office just to show that student government is stupid, is also good, although underused. The humiliations that Broderick's character goes through are too much. Payne shows some visual flair but soon would retreat to his familiar, tired them of white men in crisis ("Sideways," "Downsizing"). He's just not that good a writer or director.

I really enjoyed the character Tammy Metzler because she reminds me of myself on my cynical days, which is pretty much most of the time, especially when I review movies. But this time bad attitude added humour and depth to a suffering character, which helped to deviate away from Witherspoon's pointy chin.

The film has a lot of sexual scenes that are absolutely not appropriate for minors. They became a bore to me really quick anyway, as did Witherspoon's chin and her perfectionalism. I like this film overall though despite all that because it DID have humour and characters I can chuckle at. I mean, Chris Klein is in it, and whenever I see him I am reminded of the classic comedy "American Pie".

Very entertaining but not a very good movie. Predictable. Annoying voice overs. The protagonist is more likable than the 'hero' of the story. The gratuitous sex scenes went on way too long. The molestation and rape of an underage girl were fodder for the audience. I wouldn't recommend this movie to my worst enemy.

Now, how did this film foreshadow certain recent political developments? Election is the summary of every meaningless yet somehow also important election that ever was. Reese Witherspoon's best role, though these days she says she's bored talking about it. You can't afford to be tired of good roles, Reese.

Everyone who doesn't like this movie is just wrong. This sharp and deeply funny portrait of a high school election and the efforts of a teacher to control the outcome is still Alexander Payne's best movie (he went on to make 'Sideways', 'About Schmidt', 'The Descendants', 'Nebraska', and others). Great performances by Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick, and the entire cast. One of my all-time favorite movies.

Normally, I am uninterested in all political fiction, ascribing to politics as simply so much political theater of no importance, but really enjoyed this film and Witherspoon's performance. [Was a big Witherspoon fan from The Man in the Moon on, up until after her auto accident, when her personality and performance appears to have changed. Not a fan anymore, I'm afraid.]

Not as clever or satiric as it thinks it is.

Tammy Metzler campaign speech: "Who cares about this stupid election??? We all know it doesn't matter who gets elected President of Carver. Do you really think it's gonna change anything around here--make one single person smarter, or happier, or nicer?? The only person it does matter to is the one who gets elected. The same pathetic charade happens every year & everyone makes the same pathetic promises, just so they can put it on their transcripts to get into college. So vote for me, 'cause I don't even want to go to college... & I don't care; & as President, I won't do anything. The only promise I will make is that, if elected, I will immediately dismantle the student government system, so that none of us will ever have to sit through one of these stupid assemblies again!!!!! ...or don't vote for me--who cares??!! Don't vote at all!!!!!" (massive applause & cheering for Tammy)
