This was a difficult book to read: its clearly intended for professors of musicology, or at least serious students of music. There is so much terminology deployed that one has to keep ransacking a music dictionary to follow what he is saying. There is so much printed music that one has to be able to sight read without difficulty to comprehend the points he is making in the text (this difficulty would be much alleviated if it were an e-book with score playing app built into it). There are numerous pieces that he makes some very acute observations of, and weaves them into an interpretation of an historical phase in the artistic and spiritual development of man. No bibliography, no notes, no glossary.

This is a superb book to read. But you will have to have, at least, a basic knowledge of musical theories in order to comprehend and enjoy the book, as well as improving your understanding and appreciation of music. If you have the basic knowledge, you will certainly learn a lot!
